  • The Family Support Workers (FSW) provide home visits to pregnant women and their families and identify with the family what services are most helpful. The FSWs assist with accessing prenatal care, offer maternal infant health education, administer developmental tools on the infant, administer depression screens, assist the family with goal planning, assist with accessing benefits such as health insurance and WIC, make referrals for GED, ESL, help the family prepare for the arrival of the newborn, encourage a healthy maternal child bond, and offer other services as identified by the family and the FSW. The curriculum that we use is The Partners for a Healthy Baby Home Visiting Curriculum.

    The Healthy Start FSWs at Mary's Center are Patricia Naranjo, Sarah Barnes, and Shanti Martin. Ms. Naranjo is Spanish/English bilingual and is a life long resident of Washington DC. Ms. Barnes is a native of New York. She speaks Arabic, Spanish, and is fluent in American Sign Language. Ms. Martin was also born in New York and is Spanish/ English bilingual. The Healthy Start FSW who works at Washington Free Clinic is Luz Maria Montanez. She was born in Puerto Rico and has lived in Washington DC most of her life. She is also Spanish/English bilingual. The Healthy Start FSW at Upper Cardozo/Unity Health Care is Ann Watson. Ms. Watson is Spanish/English bilingual and is a native of North Carolina.

    We have a job opening for another Family Support Worker and welcome applicants. We are seeking an enthusiastic Family Support Worker to be part of our great team that provides maternal child health advocacy, support, and education through home visitation to pregnant women and their families in wards 1,2, & 4 of DC. Person must be committed to working in a diverse community. Must have good sense of humor. Bilingual Spanish/ English preferred. BA/BS in human service field and/ or commensurate experience.     Nurse
    The Healthy Start Nurse provides post partum visits to mothers and their newborns. The Nurse works with the family to ensure the newborn and the family are receiving appropriate care, provide health education, and encourage a healthy maternal child bond. She also guides and supports the Family Support Workers in their work with families, and provides trainings to staff on public health and perinatal topics. The Healthy Start Nurse is Joyce Day. She has many years of experience as a public health nurse in DC and has lived in DC for most of her life.

    Mental Health Provider
    This position is currently open and we welcome applicants. We are seeking bilingual Spanish/ English Mental Health Provider to work as part of our enthusiastic, supportive team in our Home Visitation Program at a nationally recognized maternal child health clinic. Will provide in home & office mental health counseling to women & families. Masters degree in social work, counseling, or related field required & knowledge of domestic violence & substance abuse issues preferred.     Outreach Worker
    This position is currently open and we welcome applicants. We are seeking a Spanish/ English bilingual Outreach Worker to provide outreach services on mobile medical unit, canvass neighborhoods, meet with residents & community based organizations, provide screening & psychosocial assessments to pregnant women, provide health education, administer pregnancy tests, provide hiv counseling and testing, linkages with insurance and other entitlements. Must have good sense of humor, be energetic, friendly, motivated, comfortable working in diverse community. Must have BA/ BS in human service field and/ or commensurate community experience.     Family Assessment Workers
    The Family Assessment Workers (FAWs) meet with each family who has a positive screen (completed by clinic staff at the time of intake). The FAWs complete a parent survey assessment with each family. According to the assessment, the family is offered Healthy Start or Healthy Families services. All these services are completely voluntary and the family always has the right to refuse. The Family Assessment Workers are Kim Hammett, a life long resident of DC, and Tania Arostegui, a native of Nicaragua, is Spanish/ English bilingual, and conversational in French. Natasha Afonso just joined our team. She is a native of India and is Spanish/ English bilingual.
